Percentages: Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percents

What a percentage really is, how to move between fractions, decimals and percentages, how to find a percentage of an amount, and how to work backwards to the original.

3 min read Supports 3 lessons
In short

Percent means per hundred. 35%35\%35% is 35100\frac{35}{100}10035, or 0.350.350.35. Finding a percentage of an amount means converting the percentage to a decimal and multiplying.

Percent comes from the Latin per centum, "for each hundred". A percentage is simply a fraction with denominator 100100100, written with a %\%% sign instead.

35%=3510035\% = \tfrac{35}{100}35%=10035

35 out of 100 squares: 35%=35100=0.35=72035\% = \frac{35}{100} = 0.35 = \frac{7}{20}35%=10035=0.35=207.

Because everything is out of a hundred, percentages make comparisons easy. Is 1720\frac{17}{20}2017 better than 4150\frac{41}{50}5041? As percentages, 85%85\%85% beats 82%82\%82% at a glance.

Three ways to write a number

Conversions
ab→  a÷b  decimal→  ×100  percent\frac{a}{b} \xrightarrow{\;a \div b\;} \text{decimal} \xrightarrow{\;\times 100\;} \text{percent}baa÷bdecimal×100percent

Going backwards: divide by 100100100 to get a decimal, then write it as a fraction and simplify.

Tip

Learn the classics by heart: 12=50%\frac12 = 50\%21=50%, 14=25%\frac14 = 25\%41=25%, 34=75%\frac34 = 75\%43=75%, 15=20%\frac15 = 20\%51=20%, 110=10%\frac{1}{10} = 10\%101=10%, 13≈33.3%\frac13 \approx 33.3\%31≈33.3%.

A percentage of an amount

"Of" means multiply. To find p%p\%p% of xxx, convert p%p\%p% to a decimal and multiply.

Percentage of a quantity
p% of x=p100×xp\% \text{ of } x = \frac{p}{100} \times xp% of x=100p×x
15% = 12
85% = 68
total = 80 (100 parts)

15%15\%15% of 808080 is 0.15×80=120.15 \times 80 = 120.15×80=12.

For mental arithmetic, build from easy pieces. 10%10\%10% is a tenth, so 10%10\%10% of 808080 is 888. Half of that, 5%5\%5%, is 444. Together, 15%15\%15% is 121212.

Working backwards

If you know a percentage of a number but not the number itself, write an equation and divide.

Worked example

30%30\%30% of a number is 242424. What is the number?

  1. 1

    Write it as an equation.

    0.3×x=240.3 \times x = 240.3×x=24

Check: 30%30\%30% of 808080 is 242424. ✓

Percentages over 100

Nothing stops a percentage going above 100100100. 150%150\%150% of 404040 is 1.5×40=601.5 \times 40 = 601.5×40=60: the whole amount plus half again. This idea is the key to percentage increases.

Watch out

Percentages need a reference amount. "Prices rose 10%10\%10%" means 10%10\%10% of the old price. Be clear what the 100%100\%100% is.

Common questions

How do I turn a fraction into a percentage?

Divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal, then multiply by 100100100. For example 38=0.375=37.5%\frac{3}{8} = 0.375 = 37.5\%83=0.375=37.5%.

What is the quickest way to find a percentage of a number in my head?

Start from 10%10\%10% (divide by 101010) and 1%1\%1% (divide by 100100100), then combine them. For 15%15\%15%, add 10%10\%10% and half of it.
